Under the current IOC treatment, the English name "Rainbow Lorikeet" applies only to the blue-bellied, green-collared races of eastern and southern Australia (now Trichoglossus moluccanus).

Green-collared, green-bellied races in the Moluccas, New Guinea and its islands, the Bismarcks (including the Admiralties), the Solomons, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia (including the Loyalty Islands) are split off as Coconut Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus).
