These are the birds I saw in the last 8 hours of the winter solstice. It was too cold to go outside, so these birds were all seen out my back door, eating at my birdfeeder.
No poetry, but there is something to be said about observing the very real pecking order among these birds. Interesting to notice who makes who leave and how the others patiently wait in the branches above the feeder until they can get a chance. Also, some small birds don't even seem to be afraid of some bigger ones.
