White-bellied Cuckooshrike (Coracina papuensis)

Date: 5 July 2008

Location: Honiara (Honiara, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands)

Number observed: 4

Juveniles of unknown sex: 2

Adults of unknown sex: 2

Notes:

One adult bird eating a house gecko. Gecko's feet sort of sticking to the bird's bill, but it whacked the lizard against limbs until it could swallow it down, ignoring the begging calls of a clingy juvenile, which looked almost fully grown.

Calls here are monosyllabic and fairly low-pitched. Totally different from the sharp, high "kis-kis" on the north coast of New Guinea and from the even less similar calls of birds near Darwin.

See general information about White-bellied Cuckooshrike.
