Goliath Imperial Pigeon (Ducula goliath)
Date: 30 May 2008
Location: Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue (humid forest) (Southern Province, New Caledonia)
Notes:
Hooting is startlingly low-pitched and powerful. After hearing many birds through the day, I finally located two perched near each other below the forest canopy. Huge birds, easily the size of a mid-range Buteo raptor. When calling, bent head down until bill touched breast and inflated neck. pinkish bill and bright red iris. Deep gray; chestnut on wings; paler undertail coverts; feathered legs. Neck feathers pointed, giving a slightly maned look. When the took off and flew, they looked monstrously huge, wow!
