Horned Parakeet (Eunymphicus cornutus)

Date: 29 May 2008

Location: Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue (headquarters and entrance road) (Southern Province, New Caledonia)

Number observed: 5

Notes:

Spectacular, maybe the most beautiful parrot I've seen anywhere. Bright green, a slightly darker shade on the mantle. Wings and tail bright blue. Nape yellow; forehead bright red; face black. Slender, antenna-like “horns” tipped red. Nasal, laughter-like calls not unlike some calls of New Caledonian Crow, but softer and more mellow.
