Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris)

Date: 13 April 2008

Location: Savegre Mountain Hotel (San Gerardo de Dota, Provincia de San José, Costa Rica)

Number observed: 1

Adult males: 1

Notes:

high in a tree calling; call: two whistles, first slightly lower pitched, second descending, rather mournful; green head, breast upperparts; white band separating green breast from scarlet belly; finely barred black-and-white undertail; yellow bill; periods of stillness in between dramatic sallies; belly color definitely not deep, bright red but instead a scarlet shade -- not flat orange either, a bit confusing since I'd never seen either species
