Papuan Frogmouth (Podargus papuensis)

Date: 3 September 2006

Location: Pacific Adventist University (Koiari Park, Central, Papua New Guinea)

Notes:

large, cryptically colored bird on nest of a few twigs; huge wide head and bill with "fat lips" and feathers sticking up above upper mandible; plumage intricately patterned but with absolutely no prominent features: it was neither brown nor gray and showed no eyebrow, obvious white spotting, or reddish tones; tail appeared very ragged; the bird appeared big and long-tailed but I feel I have nothing to compare this with; maybe like a Pheasant Coucal in size (also seen at PAU), but I didn't think of that comparison for several days, unfortunately
