Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus)

Date: 31 July 2006

Location: Morehead (Morehead, Morehead, Western, Papua New Guinea)

Notes:

huge, black, slow-flying and front-heavy bird flew into tree; perched, a backlit pair displayed extremely long, strongly erect crest of feathers; very long, strongly downcurved upper mandible; feeding on large, round fruits in bare treetop; getting close, I could just make out a red patch on the cheek of one bird, though backlighting from rising sun was very strong; later heard call, higher and less harsh than Sulphur-crested and with an abrupt ending
