Brush Cuckoo (Cacomantis variolosus)
Date: 30 August 2006
Location: Pak Island (Pak Island, Manus, Papua New Guinea)
Notes:
common and conspicuous in open village; pale gray head and dark eye; darker back seemed to contrast with head in profile but not when view from the back; fairly dark cinnamon underparts, quite unlike the pale, washed-out birds in field guides; tiny white tips to graduated tailfeathers; tail often half-fanned; flight undulating because of flaps followed by glide; finally solves the mystery of the loud "wait-for-me-ee; wait-for-me-ee! WAIT-FOR-ME-EE!" song I've heard all over the country
