Notes:
Best and longest look I'd ever had at a Northern Shrike. From a distance noted pale mantle, prominent bill, narrow mask -- all suggestive but not conclusive from a distance. We waited as the bird hunted from high points on big brush piles. Once I saw it impale a grasshopper-like insect on the barbed wire fence. As it came closer, I had great looks at the slightly darker edges on the breast feathers, flesh-colored bill base, substantial bill with long hook, narrow mask (covering only the lower half of the eye) and whitish marks in lores, white rump, white line over bill, obvious neck and square head, etc. Charley digiscoped good shots.

Thanks, Jim. This is one of the southernmost occurrences ever documented in Missouri, so it was a really neat find. And what a cool bird.
