King of Saxony Bird-of-paradise (Pteridophora alberti)

Date: 1 November 2006

Location: Enga (Enga, Papua New Guinea)

Trip: Kumul King of Saxony Trip < Kumul Lodge '06

Notes:

Weird, spectacular birds! I heard their wild, insect-like songs from high in the canopy but never managed to see one in the midst of a display. One male fed at eye level just a few feet away from us. The long, flexible head plumes were longer than his entire body. The pennants were a light, neutral color until they gleamed pearly blue in the light. Dark head, buffy belly. Wow.
