Collapsing locations

I entered my original observations from a list made over many years. Because of this, my locations are sometimes duplicated due to a minor variation in the name I used at the time. Other than reentering observations into one location is there a way to copy them over or collapse them into one? I know I'm asking a lot, but I figured someone might have a suggestion.

Chivis,

You can change the location of an observation by just editing that observation and selecting a different location. So, you don't need to re-enter all of your observations.

I realize that changing all of your observations one-by-one like that could be annoying, so we are planning on creating a "Merge Locations" feature at some point that would allow you to quickly move all observations from one location to another.

Thanks. Maybe I'll wait. Meantime I have a lot of work just to spot my locations on the map. Well, its fun too or I wouldn't do it. :)

I have the same problem - have the same location written in slightly different ways over the years - so now have 4 to 8 "locations" which are all actually the same place. Hope you guys can figure out your clever Merge thing.

and thanks for making the Locations list more user-friendly.

But why are American states called plain "Wisconsin" for example, while Australian states are called "State of New South Wales" and so on? Quite unnecessary (and long).

Thanks for the feedback, Fregata. We have locations merge on the to-do list and will get to it soon, we hope!

Regarding the place names, we have pulled together different publicly available location information databases to help run that part of Birdstack. We have well over 3 million place names in the resulting database, and so we are forced to use them as they come -- we can't possibly tweak them by hand. Thus, we aren't sure why the Australian states are listed with long names, but that's how it seems to be!

By the way, I'm headed for Oz in a couple of months. Not sure where you live, but you can email me through the contact form on my blog if you'd like to get some birding in. I'll be in several major cities May-July.
