I had hoped that I could put all my observations in one location by using birdstack. I visualized that I could call up a list by say North America and check off all the birds I had seen in this area. I have been trying to find a way to do that, but have been unsuccessful so far. Am I wanting to do something that is not part of the way birdstack works?
We don't currently have a way to pull up a "checklist" for a selected location. That sort of fine-grained distributional data just isn't freely available to us right now.
However, you certainly can use Birdstack to create lists by location (county lists, state lists, etc.).
First, go to "My Locations" and create a few locations, filling out as much information about each location as you want to. For example, you could create a location called "My Yard" in Duncanville, Dallas County, Texas, United States.
Then, add observations to that location.
Then, you can use the "Search for observations" link to create lists. You could make a list for "Texas," which would aggregate observations from "My Yard" and all other locations that you have identified as being inside Texas.
You could also make a list that includes all observations from the US and Canada, etc., etc., etc.
As for a life list, one is already set up for you on the "My Observations" page. Every time you add a record of a new bird, it is automatically added to your life list.
In Birdstack, "lists" aren't the same as lists on paper or in spreadsheets. Instead, "lists" are actually queries -- they search through your data and pull up all observations matching a set of criteria you defined.

Hope this helps.
