Ecoregion feature problem

Great site! One thing that particularly attracted me was the eco-regions feature. But the locations feature keeps telling me the eco-region is incorrect, even though I verified it via the zip code on the national geographic site.

Not sure this belongs with "geocoding," but, oh well!

Hi Waterthrush,

What is the ecoregion you are trying to enter?

Ohhhh, OK.

It should be NA0401 -- that's two letters and four digits: zero-four-zero-one.

All of the ecoregion codes are constructed with two letters followed by four numbers, which is what the program checks for.

Hope this helps. :)

Yes, indeed, that helps :-)

I like the ecoregion feature! Wish list: customizable locations (NJ Audubon divides its seasonal reporting areas into 5 more or less ecologically justifiable regions, but they are unrelated to human political boundaries. And in fact my Birders Diary list has those regions as one of my sorting categories.

Any chance in the future?

Well, we are planning to implement tags in the near future. This would let you tag observations and/or locations with your own customized category system, and you could then generate lists, etc., based on observations or locations with those tags.

For example, in Texas, the reporting regions are things like "Panhandle," "South Texas Brushlands," etc. So, I could tag my data with these categories and then pull up lists from each region (restricted by date if wanted, like everything from the Panhandle during January-March 2008).

Is that the kind of thing you're looking for?

Yes, that will work, although I'd like a more "hierarchical" feature. Meantime, I'm happy with this!

Another feature I sometimes see on similar boards are personal journals (for those of us who haven't gotten it together enough to get our own blogs yet!)

I assume this will be integrated with e-birds at some point, that too will be great.
